Copy of a Jeremy Lipking painting

Today in artclass, we copied some paintings by Jeremy Lipking. I painted this one:
Copy of a painting by Jeremy Lipking, oil on wood 40x50cm

The coat and hair were pretty quickly done, but I struggled for a long time with the subtlety of the little girl's face. I'm happy with how it finally turned out, even though it's not nearly as good as the original (which I won't show here...). I have had a paper print of this picture for a long time, and now I can actually have it on the wall in my atelier as a painting!

Masterclass child portrait

I followed a masterclass Child Portraits, from Dutch Portrait Prize winner and Wackers teacher Irma Braat. She teaches a method for painting children from life, letting the children pose in six short sittings of 8 to 10 minutes, with a 10 minute break to play inbetween. The painters can check their work during the breaks, mix paint, look at the work of others. The first two to three sessions (half an hour painting time in total) are used for setting up the darks in raw or burnt umber, until there is a good likeness. Then the colours are added. The painter keeps correcting until the last minute. These portraits were all made from life, with about an hour total painting time.

Pippi

"Pippi", oil on canvas 90x120cm
The last two days we worked with guest teacher Beth Namenwirt on a large painting. Assignment: a full figure in a room with lots of stuff. Painting from photos and imagination. Fun to do, however it made me more certain that I want to paint from life and observation, not photos.
